چکیده

Preface Abstract Mathematical modeling computer programs for several hardwood sawing systems have been developed and are described. One has judgment capabilities. Several of the subroutines are common to all of the models. These models are the basis for further research which examines the question of best-grade sawing method in terms of lumber value yield. This Research Paper is one in a series of three which describe the computer simulation of hardwood log sawing. Mathematically modeled logs with a selection of diameters, core defect diameters. and knot patterns were sawn by four sawing methods. and the resultant values were recorded. This first paper, USDA Forest Service Research Paper FPL 355, " Simulation of hardwood log sawing, " describes the sawing methods, and the background and development of these programs. The second paper, FPL 356, " Lumber values from computerized simulation of hardwood log sawing. " presents the results of the sawing in terms of volume yield and lumber value, and compares them for the four sawing methods. The third paper, FPL 357, " Programs for computer simulation of hardwood log sawing, " lists the programs, model assumptions, and program organization and variables.

Development of a 3d Log Sawing Optimization System for Small Sawmills in Central Appalachia, Us

A 3D log sawing optimization system was developed to perform log generation, opening face determination, sawing simulation, and lumber grading using 3Dmodeling techniques. Heuristic and dynamic programming algorithms were used to determine opening face and grade sawing optimization. Positions and shapes of internal log defects were predicted using a model developed by the USDA Forest Service. L...

The frequency and level of sweep in mixed hardwood saw logs in the eastern United States

Hardwood sawmills traditionally saw logs in a manner that either orients sawlines parallel to the log central axis (straight sawing) or the log surface (allowing for taper). Sweep is characterized as uniform curvature along the entire length of a log. For logs with sweep, lumber yield losses from straight and taper sawing increase with increasing levels of sweep. Curve sawing logs with sweep wi...

A versatile microcomputer-based interactive graphics sawing program has been developed as a tool for modeling various hardwood processes, from bucking and topping to log sawing, lumber edging, secondary processing, and even veneering. The microcomputer platform makes the tool affordable and accessible. A solid modeling basis provides the tool with a sound geometrical and topological foundation....

Effect of Curve Sawing on Lumber Recovery and Warp of Short Cherry Logs Containing Sweep

—It has been estimated that approximately one-third of hardwood sawlogs have a significant amount of sweep and that 7 to nearly 40 percent of the yield is lost from logs that have greater than 1 inch of sweep. While decreased yield is important, for hardwood logs the loss of lumber value is likely more significant. A method that produced lumber while accounting for log curvature (sweep) would a...

A Three-dimensional Optimal Sawing System for Small Sawmills in Central Appalachia

—A three-dimensional (3D) log sawing optimization system was developed to perform 3D log generation, opening face determination, sawing simulation, and lumber grading. Superfi cial characteristics of logs such as length, large-end and small-end diameters, and external defects were collected from local sawmills. Internal log defect positions and shapes were predicted using a USDA Forest Service ...
